Roberto Zafalon, Technology Program Manager, External Technology Coordination, STMicroelectronics, Italy 7. Thomas F. Blaesi, President and CEO, ChipVision Design Systems, Germany
High frequencies and submicron feature size make predicting and managing power consumption of next-generation SoCs one of the major issues of the wireless industry. Power is also critical in home applications SoCs as high dissipation levels require expensive packaging and cooling. Tradeoff between overall systemperformance and power requirements have to be analyzed as soon as possible in such designs. Furthermore, functions related to dynamic power as well as thermal considerations affecting leakage currents which greatly impact battery life and system reliability need to be taken intoconsideration at the earliest stage. Are ESL solutions now able to address such issues earlier in thedesign flow in order to better anticipate power consumption of the whole system? ESL vendors and wireless chip and device manufacturers will debate various industry innovations to predict power consumption in complex multi-core SoCs earlier in the design flow. Panelists will give their viewpoints on the best way to anticipate power consumption profiles in order to design the right architecture which meets today's ever-increasing power requirements. |

| CoFluent hosts seminar at EDSFair |
[December 3, 2007]
CoFluent Design will host a seminar at EDSFairon Friday, January 25, at 11:30 AM:
Title: From concept to system architecture in multimedia using performance models with CoFluent Studio Presenter: Hidemi Yokokawa, CoFluent Design Abstract: The RTL to ESL paradigm shift has materialized in higher design abstractions for coping with increasing complexity and C-based simulation technology for earlier HW/SW co-development. SystemC has emerged as the industry standard for HW/SW co-simulation at a cycle-accurate or transactional level (Transactional Level Modeling - TLM). However, such virtual platform and virtual prototyping techniques can be used after HW/SW partitioning only and require the complete embedded software code and a full description of all hardware IPs, which are obtained with a high effort/cost that limit architecture flexibility. CoFluent Design introduces a new level of ESL modeling and simulation for the architecture exploration and performance analysis of embedded systems and SoCs before and at HW/SW partitioning. Based on more than 30 years of R&D, CoFluent Studio patented technology allows the description of a complete HW/SW system at the message level (Message Level Modeling - MLM, corresponding to a Transactional Level 3 - TL3) based on simple graphics and C code that HW, SW and system engineers are familiar with. It generates automatically SystemC code which simulation results allow for behavioral, real-time, architectural, and performance estimation. CoFluent models do not necessitate embedded SW code, Instruction Set Simulators - ISS - or hardware IPs: they are created from behavioral or generic performance models described by the user. CoFluent Design's method is based on a Y design flow that separates the timed-behavioral view from the execution platform view and combines them to obtain a macroscopic architecture model. The Y flow and unique drag-and-drop mapping feature allow for unlimited architecture exploration breadth and depth, while performance analysis includes monitoring of dynamic profiles of resource utilization/load, memory footprint, power consumption and cost/Si area indices. By providing executable specifications and golden reference model & test cases, CoFluent Studio reveals itself as the unified communication vector between platform developers, application developers and subcontractors. |
